The Proven 4-Step CEO Reset That Fixes Q4 Mistakes

Last updated August 25, 2026

Q4 doesn't have to mean catching up on everything you missed this summer. It just means picking one clear step forward.

This summer took more out of me than I expected. I had the gift of traveling for speaking engagements, something I'm genuinely grateful for, and then I went straight into a few weeks at the lake with my husband and kids. My kids are getting older, and they don't always want to spend time with mom the way they used to, so I take full advantage of every moment they say yes to.

That's the trade-off. Summer pulls your attention away from the business, and in a good way, we need that balance. But every September, right as the kids go back to school, the same instinct shows up: catch up on everything, all at once.

Why Catching Up Isn't the Answer

After twelve years of running this business, here's what I've learned. You don't have to make up for lost time. You don't have to start from scratch. You get to take one clear, strong next step and build the rest of the year around it.

I think of back to school season as my second January, a fresh slate right in the middle of the year. Every fall, I run my business through the same four step reset to get there without trying to fix everything at once.

The Four Step Reset

Step one is resetting your CEO mindset. The biggest mistake I see coming out of summer is chasing every goal, every idea, and every system at once. Alignment is the goal, not everything. Before anything else, decide what season of business you're actually in, visibility, hiring, or profit, and let that decide where your time and attention go.

Step two is getting clarity on your numbers. That starts with one honest question: are your books current? If not, that's the task before anything else. Once they are, your income statement shows where your revenue and expenses actually stand, and your balance sheet shows what your income statement can't. If you're profitable but still can't find the cash, the answer is almost always sitting there.

Step three is planning the fourth quarter with intention. Map out every expense and launch before you spend a dollar, and don't spend a dollar just to save 40 cents in taxes. Every purchase should move you toward next year's goals, not just shrink this year's bill.

Step four is building a wait till next quarter list for the ideas that don't fit right now, then asking for help with what's left. You don't have to do all of it yourself.

In this episode, you'll learn:
  • Why chasing every goal at once backfires every fall
  • How to figure out which season of business you're actually in
  • The first place to look when you're profitable but can't find your cash
  • Why spending a dollar to save 40 cents in taxes rarely helps
  • How to build a list for the ideas that need to wait
