The Urgent Tax Warning Most Business Owners Never See

Last updated July 28, 2026

For a long time, I thought a business owner who couldn't reach their CPA outside of tax season was working with the wrong person.

I don't think that anymore.

The Mistake Hiding in a Clean Return

A business owner came to us mid-year with a CPA they had trusted for years, and the returns were always accurate and filed on time.

When we sat down and did the annual review, we found three things that relationship had never surfaced. Their business had grown to the point where an S corp election would have saved them real money on self-employment tax, and nobody had ever brought it up. Their estimated payments were still based on last year's income, even though this year was on track to be much stronger, which meant a bigger tax bill was heading their way. And they hadn't made a single retirement contribution all year, simply because no one had prompted the conversation.

Every one of those things was still fixable in the fall, because we caught them while there was still time to act.

Why the Mid-Year Tax Check-In Exists

This is the frame I come back to constantly, and I call it the boardroom accountability standard: every financial conversation should answer three questions, what happened, why it happened, and what you, the CEO, are going to do about it.

Business owners are usually only asked the first question, and only in April, once it's already too late to act on the answer. This week's episode of CEO Numbers Network walks through the exact six-area review we run with every KSA Tax Partners client, along with the real client story above, so you can start asking yourself all three questions instead of just one.

What You'll Learn In This Episode

  • Why tax filing and tax planning are not the same job
  • The six areas we review in every mid-year tax check-in
  • A real client story where three of those areas were missed entirely
  • The boardroom standard I hold every client to
  • How to know if your CPA relationship is built for planning, or just filing
