In this episode, Danielle is joined by Nicole, one-half of the dynamic sister duo behind Fantasy Fangirls Podcast, to talk about her leap from running a professional coaching business to building a wildly successful podcast brand that’s taken the book world by storm.
This isn’t a story about going viral overnight (although that did happen). It's a story of personal growth. It's a story about making intentional, informed decisions and trusting yourself enough to pivot when you find what lights you up. Nicole shares how a chance reading of a fantasy novel sparked an idea, how she and her sister went “all in” on creating a show they loved, and what it took to turn that passion project into a full-time career.
Key Takeaways:
- Pivoting Can Be the Smartest Move You Make: Nicole’s shift from coaching to podcasting wasn’t a step backward, it was a leap toward something that energized her every day.
- Strategic Investments Pay Off—If You Actually Implement: The importance of acting on what you learn from courses and mentors, instead of staying in “forever student” mode.
- Passion and Profit Can Go Hand-in-Hand: The Fantasy Fangirls Podcast proves that you can build a sustainable business around what you genuinely love when you combine your passion with taking an honest look at your numbers.
- Entrepreneurship Doesn’t Have to Be Lonely: Whether you’re going it solo or have a team, you don’t have to white knuckle it to success. Don’t be afraid to create a support system and rely on others along the way.
- Make Space for Hobbies and Discovering Your Spark: Choosing projects that light you up can be the key to longevity and fulfillment in business.

00;00;00;00 - 00;00;22;26
Danielle Hayden
In today's episode of Business by the Books, I have one of our longtime clients, Nicole from Fantasy Fangirls, who is an absolute powerhouse entrepreneur. Nicole took a leap from coaching into full-time podcasting and built a wildly successful brand alongside her sister. It is a true honor to be able to share her story. This isn't a story about going viral.
00;00;22;26 - 00;00;40;02
Danielle Hayden
It's a story of personal growth. It's a story about making intentional, informed financial decisions every step of the way. Let's dive right in to my conversation with Nicole. Tell the audience a little bit about who you are. Your mission in the world today.
00;00;40;06 - 00;00;43;25
Nicole
Oh, mission in the world. What a good question. My name is Nicole.
00;00;43;25 - 00;00;53;13
Nicole
I am one half of the Fantasy Fangirls. I host a podcast called, you'll never guess it, Fantasy Fangirls, where my sister and I deep dive fantasy books. We look at characters,
00;00;53;13 - 00;00;54;17
Nicole
the lore,
00;00;54;17 - 00;00;55;12
Nicole
the theories,
00;00;55;18 - 00;00;57;15
Nicole
the worldbuilding,
00;00;57;15 - 00;01;01;27
Nicole
magic systems, all of that good stuff. And we talk about it for like three hours every single week. And it's a
00;01;01;27 - 00;01;04;17
Nicole
blast. Mission is such a
00;01;04;17 - 00;01;07;15
Nicole
fun question because it really has
00;01;07;15 - 00;01;08;29
Nicole
evolved,
00;01;09;01 - 00;01;13;12
Nicole
because originally it was Lexi and I, my sister and I,
00;01;13;13 - 00;01;15;02
Nicole
love
00;01;15;05 - 00;01;35;14
Nicole
when we're able to go beyond just the material itself. So, for instance, we started our podcast with a book called Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and we really wanted something that talked about the dragon types and talked about the magic system of Basgiath War College and all of these different things. And we were like, nothing like that exists in the world.
00;01;35;14 - 00;01;36;18
Nicole
So we kind of said,
00;01;36;18 - 00;01;37;05
Nicole
Well, screw
00;01;37;05 - 00;01;40;21
Nicole
it, what if we created it ourselves? So it started off as a
00;01;40;27 - 00;01;42;08
Nicole
‘How can we
00;01;42;10 - 00;01;45;09
Nicole
get more into this material? How can we like, insert
00;01;45;09 - 00;01;45;28
Nicole
ourselves
00;01;45;28 - 00;01;48;16
Nicole
in these magical worlds and not live in reality?’
00;01;48;18 - 00;02;01;19
Nicole
And that's the key right there. Oh, I know, it's been great. I tell you, I hang out with dragons all day. It's awesome. I'm wearing a shirt that says dragons versus wyverns because I'm very passionate about their characterizations. It's funny. But then
00;02;01;19 - 00;02;05;26
Nicole
it really switched as the show started taking off and we saw
00;02;05;29 - 00;02;10;03
Nicole
The impact that talking
00;02;10;03 - 00;02;32;26
Nicole
about these books in this way had in this community. And it has now created this, I mean, we have almost half a million people between our listenership, between our YouTube, our social media, our fan club membership, and it's just all of these people have come together because they love talking about these books in this way.
00;02;32;28 - 00;02;46;10
Nicole
And it's crazy because the mission has really transformed into, oh my God, look at this community all together. How can we make us all just feel like we have a place in the world? Like reading is such an isolating hobby really
00;02;46;13 - 00;02;46;23
Nicole
a lot of
00;02;46;23 - 00;02;49;08
Nicole
the time, and we want
00;02;49;08 - 00;02;50;12
Nicole
to
00;02;50;14 - 00;02;58;00
Nicole
take away that barrier. Because when you love a book so much, you don't want to leave it, and then to be able to talk to someone about it and say,
00;02;58;00 - 00;03;01;19
Nicole
Oh my gosh, can you believe what Violet Sorrengail did in X, Y, and Z chapter?
00;03;01;19 - 00;03;19;18
Nicole
It was freaking amazing to be able to talk to someone about it. It just feels like this new level of kinship, and to see those types of friendships be created has been the biggest gift. I'm kind of going off on a little bit of a tangent, but last weekend I was interviewing an author here in Denver, and there was a
00;03;19;18 - 00;03;21;08
Nicole
whole section
00;03;21;08 - 00;03;31;29
Nicole
of the audience that was just members of our premium membership, our fan club. And I just got to go and sit with them for like two hours after the show, and just like
00;03;32;06 - 00;03;32;13
Nicole
that
00;03;32;13 - 00;03;33;22
Nicole
pop around, and they were
00;03;33;22 - 00;03;35;17
Nicole
all just friends
00;03;35;17 - 00;03;40;21
Nicole
with each other, and none of them knew each other prior to Fantasy Fangirls. And that just like,
00;03;40;21 - 00;03;45;23
Nicole
I left that feeling like my heart grew three sizes that day, that’s for sure!
00;03;45;23 - 00;04;04;04
Danielle Hayden
That is your mission right there. I love the community piece of that and the instant connection that everyone has together. And it's so true. When I when I read, I often find myself like trying to tell my husband about the whole book. Oh yeah. Or my daughter. And I'm like, but you don't understand. And he's like, I know I don't understand.
00;04;04;11 - 00;04;07;00
Nicole
I don't. He doesn’t
00;04;07;02 - 00;04;09;12
Danielle Hayden
like to read. So he's like, I really, really don't understand.
00;04;09;13 - 00;04;23;26
Nicole
Cause I used to do that with my husband. When I would get really into a book, I would just word vomit it at him for like two hours. And my sweet golden retriever of a husband would just, like, smile and nod. And then finally at the end, he was like, why don't you start a podcast where you talk about it?
00;04;23;26 - 00;04;24;04
Nicole
And I was
00;04;24;04 - 00;04;33;06
Nicole
like, no, like, absolutely not. I can't do that. And then the irony is, it's now my full-time job two years later. So yeah-I love it.
00;04;33;08 - 00;04;45;29
Danielle Hayden
Well, okay, so maybe you could tell the audience a little bit about your transition. So we watched you transition from one business to another. What made you do that and what was it like to make that big transition?
00;04;46;01 - 00;04;54;24
Nicole
It's so funny because it was both as easy as breathing and also like saying goodbye to a baby and going to another one. I think those are the two biggest ways.
00;04;54;25 - 00;04;59;14
Nicole
I'm not a mother, so take that analogy with a big old grain of salt.
00;04;59;17 - 00;05;15;26
Nicole
So what had happened was I was an entrepreneur for about five years. I did primarily, coaching around perfectionism and goal achieving, because we perfectionists tend to really live in that all or nothing mindset. And so,
00;05;15;26 - 00;05;19;09
Nicole
it's, it's exhausting. It's so exhausting.
00;05;19;11 - 00;05;40;13
Nicole
And so I leaned a lot into that style of, coaching where it's like, okay, how can we go after your goals but without sacrificing your sanity? And as a result, I had a podcast. It was called Imperfect Success, and I loved the podcasting element of it. I did like one-on-one coaching. I did group coaching, but the podcast always kept being that thing that called to me the most.
00;05;40;15 - 00;05;45;24
Nicole
So I did that for five years and then I,
00;05;45;26 - 00;05;46;02
Nicole
in
00;05;46;02 - 00;06;05;01
Nicole
2023, at the beginning, I really made this goal for myself to say, okay, I know I love this aspect of the business. What if I made it a bigger part of it? So I started working with someone called, Kevin Chemidlin, who works, who is Grow the Show. He was awesome. And I went to a podcasting conference
00;06;05;04 - 00;06;06;08
Nicole
called Podcast Movement.
00;06;06;08 - 00;06;17;12
Nicole
It was really lucky it was here in Denver. And all of this is happening at the same time that I had just finished getting married, which means all of my free time that was devoted to planning a wedding with my husband
00;06;17;14 - 00;06;20;20
Nicole
was free time once again.
00;06;20;22 - 00;06;42;23
Nicole
And so I decided to pick up this book down here in the corner called A Court of Thorns and Roses. And I had, you know, I feel like a lot of the times in our 20s we’re so devoted to what we, quote unquote, should read. So it's a lot of nonfiction. So I had been in nonfiction world for forever because, especially with my previous job, I wanted to know the inner workings of a perfectionist brain.
00;06;42;23 - 00;06;45;12
Nicole
So I did lean a lot into like that neuroscience.
00;06;45;15 - 00;06;46;19
Nicole
It’s all growth. It feels like
00;06;46;19 - 00;06;47;23
Danielle Hayden
productivity.
00;06;47;24 - 00;06;56;02
Nicole
Oh, God. It's like if I'm reading a book like that I’m doing something. Yeah, I was like, I feel like this is going to help me and, you know, make me
00;06;56;02 - 00;07;17;23
Nicole
a better person. And I was like, you know what? Like, let me just pick up a fun little fantasy book. That sounds delightful. And I kid you not, it changed my life. I felt more alive than I had any moment in any part of my business previously, or any honestly, really, any part of my adult life previously.
00;07;17;25 - 00;07;25;20
Nicole
And so I started texting my sister. And as a little sister that I am, I gave her no option. And I said, you have to read these books.
00;07;25;22 - 00;07;32;13
Nicole
Like it or not. And she, being a very great trooper, picked them up as well.
00;07;32;16 - 00;07;42;03
Nicole
And we just started exchanging like 100 texts a day. And all of this is happening again, like I said, when I'm doing all this podcasting stuff, and I was at a podcasting conference,
00;07;42;03 - 00;07;42;21
Nicole
and it was two
00;07;42;21 - 00;07;49;12
Nicole
weeks before the idea for Fantasy Fangirls happened, and all I could think about was these books. And I was on Fourth Wing at the time, which is a hugely
00;07;49;12 - 00;07;50;20
Nicole
popular book now.
00;07;50;22 - 00;07;57;28
Nicole
And all I could do was think about these books. But I went to this, you know, this day of podcasting, and it was all these like big
00;07;58;01 - 00;08;09;09
Nicole
bro podcasters that were like, you have to have X amount of downloads or else you'll never be successful. And I was like, *cry, and so I went to my car and I called my sister and just wept.
00;08;09;12 - 00;08;11;12
Nicole
Because I was like, I'm never going to make it.
00;08;11;15 - 00;08;12;23
Nicole
This is impossible.
00;08;12;23 - 00;08;14;01
Nicole
I can't, I'm never.
00;08;14;02 - 00;08;15;05
Nicole
This is, it's not-
00;08;15;06 - 00;08;25;25
Nicole
It's not meant for me. And she said, you're here for a reason. Just keep going. Just, like there's some, there's some reason you're here. So after, you know, two weeks of us exchanging thousands
00;08;25;25 - 00;08;27;06
Nicole
and thousands of text messages
00;08;27;06 - 00;08;29;14
Nicole
about fantasy people who don't live in real
00;08;29;14 - 00;08;30;00
Nicole
life,
00;08;30;02 - 00;08;47;06
Nicole
we, we're looking at each other and said, okay, what if we had that podcast, like I said earlier, where it's like, let's deep dive. It's the it's the that material behind the material so we can live in these worlds a little longer. And it took a little coaxing to get me to do it. I'm not going to lie, because I'm so devoted on my other show.
00;08;47;08 - 00;08;49;07
Danielle Hayden
And so she was coaxing you to do it.
00;08;49;07 - 00;08;51;13
Nicole
She was trying to talk me into it. I was at first
00;08;51;13 - 00;08;53;09
Nicole
was like, absolutely not. I think
00;08;53;09 - 00;08;54;04
Nicole
it took less
00;08;54;04 - 00;08;56;02
Nicole
than 48 hours for me to be like, okay, fine.
00;08;56;02 - 00;09;02;20
Nicole
Let's do it. And so we start to go, you know, this will be shocking,
00;09;02;23 - 00;09;22;27
Nicole
we go all in. We start planning episodes, we start writing outlines, we start making, you know, the the intros, the outros, the material, the cover art on Canva, which was the original cover art that I designed in like two hours, and finally we rereleased. We got into the week where we were releasing our first episode, and we started with Fourth Wing,
00;09;22;27 - 00;09;24;13
Nicole
like I mentioned.
00;09;24;15 - 00;09;25;23
Nicole
And we started
00;09;25;23 - 00;09;27;00
Nicole
posting
00;09;27;02 - 00;09;36;21
Nicole
video clips of the show on TikTok, and they started going viral like crazy. And we were like, what is happening? The show's not even out yet. This is crazy.
00;09;36;27 - 00;09;39;08
Nicole
So we had a, a goal of
00;09;39;08 - 00;09;45;13
Nicole
the first week where it's like, if we get 20 downloads in that first week for a new show, no one knows who we are, like that, you know, that feels
00;09;45;13 - 00;09;47;20
Nicole
like a good stretch goal. Yeah.
00;09;47;23 - 00;10;08;00
Nicole
And we woke up that morning with 30. And then by the end of that week we had 5000. And then at the end of I think, oh, little less than three months, we had our first million. And it was like, Holy Mother of God, we have something here. So all of this is happening while she's working a freelance job and raising two
00;10;08;04 - 00;10;08;27
Nicole
toddlers at
00;10;08;27 - 00;10;32;19
Nicole
the time, and I am working on my other business and then also building, you know, Fantasy Fangirls with her. And finally, 4 or 5 months later, we were just like, this is really gaining traction. We have enough to replace our income. We are ready to go full-time in this and see what happens. And we did. And that was over a year and a half ago.
00;10;32;21 - 00;10;42;18
Danielle Hayden
I want to touch on two kind of milestones that you mentioned. You had invested to work with Kevin from Grow Your Show, that is a rather serious investment.
00;10;42;18 - 00;10;48;18
Nicole
Oh, I hyperventilated when I got my credit card. I’m gonna be straight up on it.
00;10;48;24 - 00;11;02;17
Danielle Hayden
Let's talk about that for a second, because I think as business owners, it is really difficult to think about investing in that, in the growth of our business. What ultimately allowed you to make that purchase?
00;11;02;20 - 00;11;21;12
Nicole
I think two things. One is I was full-time in my previous business and the funds, I could see where the funds would be replaced if nothing else came about from the show monetary wise. So that was really easy, and it was not right away. I should be very clear. It was, it was several months of replenishing things.
00;11;21;14 - 00;11;34;05
Nicole
And then the second reason was I looked at my goal at the very beginning of the year and I said, what am I missing to in order to get from X to Z? And that was a lot of things that I did as a goal.
00;11;34;05 - 00;11;34;22
Nicole
coach
00;11;34;22 - 00;11;54;11
Nicole
is I said, okay, where are you right now? Where do you want to go? How do we fill in the gap and I realized, where am I right now? I'm doing everything quote unquote right, but it's still not working. And I said, where do I want to be? I do want to be making money from the show so that I can have this as more of a part of the business.
00;11;54;13 - 00;11;57;05
Nicole
And then I said, okay, who is going to help me fill in that knowledge gap?
00;11;57;09 - 00;12;00;26
Nicole
Probably someone who's done that a million times would be really great.
00;12;00;29 - 00;12;08;24
Nicole
And so I had a few calls with Kevin. I talked to a few people who had been through his program, so I did my research to make sure it was like, this
00;12;08;24 - 00;12;09;08
Nicole
was a good
00;12;09;08 - 00;12;18;20
Nicole
fit for me, and it's exactly what I needed at the time. And I want to be very clear. When I first signed up, it was not okay, start from where you're at and let's keep going.
00;12;18;20 - 00;12;21;16
Nicole
I went back to the drawing board.
00;12;21;18 - 00;12;25;11
Nicole
I looked at-I had changed the name of the show. I redid
00;12;25;13 - 00;12;27;22
Nicole
almost everything regarding the
00;12;27;22 - 00;12;30;25
Nicole
structure and the outlines and I-
00;12;30;28 - 00;12;33;18
Nicole
I just, I wasn't
00;12;33;21 - 00;12;44;29
Nicole
So egotistical where I wasn't afraid to go backwards in order to go forwards. And that changed everything, because if I hadn't gone backwards and started all of that, like premise material,
00;12;45;04 - 00;12;45;16
Nicole
I wouldn't
00;12;45;16 - 00;12;51;08
Nicole
have had it fresh in my mind so that when Fantasy Fangirls came up, I went, I was able to do it really quickly with my sister.
00;12;51;10 - 00;12;52;19
Danielle Hayden
You're willing to be a student.
00;12;52;21 - 00;12;57;25
Nicole
I was willing to be a student, and I was willing to be a beginner, which I feel like is really hard after you've been doing something for five
00;12;57;25 - 00;12;59;03
Nicole
years.
00;12;59;06 - 00;13;17;19
Danielle Hayden
And even implement. You know, one thing that we see with our clients is that they'll spend a lot of money on coaching and professional development, and they're in a mode where they're always taking in more and not implementing, and it's almost a coping coping strategy. Well, let me just get more and not implement.
00;13;17;25 - 00;13;18;17
Nicole
So I,
00;13;18;23 - 00;13;34;12
Nicole
I saw that a lot with my clients and I saw that with especially in the coaching world, I felt like that was like there was always like just more and more and more attitude. So what I started doing with anything that I was investing in, I put it in my calendar and very Type-A person like that, where it was like an hour a day or
00;13;34;17 - 00;13;34;17
Nicole
a
00;13;34;18 - 00;13;47;26
Nicole
half an hour a day or an hour a week, whatever, I would be able to fit in at the time, and I would put it on my calendar to say, here's what you're going to do. So like, let's say it was module one from Grow the Show. I had it in my calendar for three days that week.
00;13;47;26 - 00;13;50;10
Nicole
Grow the Show module one, and because
00;13;50;10 - 00;13;50;28
Nicole
it was
00;13;50;28 - 00;13;52;02
Nicole
smaller, it wasn't
00;13;52;02 - 00;13;57;13
Nicole
work on all things Grow the Show. That would have been terrifying. Like there's so much in it.
00;13;57;15 - 00;14;14;17
Nicole
Or anything with coaching, I said, here's some small thing that I'm going to do. It's on my calendar. I have a space for it. Make the time for it. Because I feel like a lot of the times we as business owners feel like there's a million things for us to do because there is. But if we don't make the time for the things that we invested in, then what's the point?
00;14;14;19 - 00;14;15;26
Nicole
Yeah.
00;14;15;28 - 00;14;34;29
Danielle Hayden
Okay, here's the other thing I wanted to tie to in your story was, you guys made the decision to leave your previous business and for your sister to leave her freelance position. There's an emotional kind of background to that, but also financial, like, you can't make a decision like that with both of you having families.
00;14;34;29 - 00;14;40;19
Danielle Hayden
So from a financial perspective, how did you go about making that decision and feel confident about that?
00;14;40;21 - 00;15;02;16
Nicole
So our first month of Fantasy Fangirls, we were floundering. We had no idea what we were doing. We were making no money doing the show, and we started getting approached by talent agencies and ad agencies for the show, and we knew that's the direction we needed to head. We also knew we wanted to create a Patreon, but we just didn't have the time, frankly.
00;15;02;19 - 00;15;06;08
Nicole
And I truly believe this was like universe, God,
00;15;06;08 - 00;15;09;16
Nicole
Creation, whoever just given us a silver platter
00;15;09;16 - 00;15;12;26
Nicole
gift because my good buddy from
00;15;12;26 - 00;15;15;08
Nicole
college called me up
00;15;15;10 - 00;15;29;26
Nicole
and was like, hey, what is happening in your life right now? This is insane. And I like, he worked in the podcast industry and I told him everything and he was like, great, how can I help? You do not have to pay me. I just want in and I was like, okay,
00;15;29;26 - 00;15;34;25
Nicole
here we go. It was amazing. So he got
00;15;34;25 - 00;15;38;09
Nicole
us an agent. He like set up all the meetings with our agents. He got us booked
00;15;38;09 - 00;15;39;08
Nicole
with one of the
00;15;39;08 - 00;15;57;06
Nicole
top agencies in the world. And also then that agency worked with a network. And then, Hayden, is his name, he's our, he's now our executive producer, but we call him our sanity manager. He's basically the manager of the business now. Hayden, then got everything set up on Patreon. So he took us from,
00;15;57;09 - 00;15;58;01
Nicole
Oh, my God, what
00;15;58;01 - 00;16;21;05
Nicole
are we doing to okay, let's start making money doing this so that as you're growing, you're at least supplementing that. And you could do this full-time. And so with the three of us all putting our heads together that way, we were able to get enough steady income and steady reoccurring income that we could see where, when we made the decision to switch businesses, it was like, again, I needed those data.
00;16;21;05 - 00;16;30;12
Nicole
I needed that numbers right in front of me. And then I also needed to look at where is my energy going, because after Fantasy Fangirls started taking off, I didn't want to
00;16;30;12 - 00;16;31;11
Nicole
work on
00;16;31;14 - 00;16;47;12
Nicole
courses or stuff like that through my other business because I was just feeling so alive in this other thing, and it was so hard saying goodbye to my clients, because some of them I worked with for years, and I adore them deeply, and they're now really good friends. They now read and listen to the show and it's so fun.
00;16;47;14 - 00;16;56;08
Nicole
But that was really tough. But it all came down to what we set ourselves up monetary wise for reoccurring income, and
00;16;56;08 - 00;16;58;02
Nicole
that was
00;16;58;02 - 00;17;06;18
Nicole
honestly not something we set out to do when we first created the show. But it was something where we were like, okay, how do we make this sustainable? That is one of the biggest things.
00;17;06;21 - 00;17;12;21
Danielle Hayden
I wish more businesses understood that. I read the book Built to Sell. Have you-
00;17;12;23 - 00;17;13;11
Nicole
I never read it
00;17;13;11 - 00;17;14;10
Nicole
but I heard of it, yes.
00;17;14;10 - 00;17;41;00
Danielle Hayden
Okay. John Warrillow, amazing concept around building a business. And one of the number one strategies within that is to build reoccurring revenue so that you can make really important personal and business decisions and then knowing what your operating expenses were. So how did you kind of back into that number of like, all right, this is the revenue number I need to be able to say, okay, I'm ready?
00;17;41;03 - 00;17;46;01
Nicole
I wanted it to match or beat my coaching revenue, and I'll, I'll be frank,
00;17;46;08 - 00;17;58;11
Nicole
it blew it out of the water. Yeah, by a country mile. So I said, okay, no I think this is okay then. Good. Yeah. So I felt pretty good about that. And I,
00;17;58;13 - 00;17;59;20
Nicole
like we were working our
00;17;59;26 - 00;18;00;19
Nicole
butts off
00;18;00;19 - 00;18;13;15
Nicole
these first five months trying to lay all the groundwork. So like we were working like 16, 18 hour days. It was insane. Lexi was working on the outlines until like three in the morning. Like it was
00;18;13;18 - 00;18;14;00
Nicole
one of those
00;18;14;00 - 00;18;16;01
Nicole
times where we now look back on and we're like,
00;18;16;04 - 00;18;18;07
Nicole
Oh, how did we do that?
00;18;18;10 - 00;18;19;21
Danielle Hayden
Yeah, you can't do that for long.
00;18;19;21 - 00;18;20;23
Nicole
But you know, and
00;18;20;23 - 00;18;38;16
Nicole
so it definitely hit that moment where we were like, something needs to change. And that just happened to be everything was in place monetary wise where we could make that pivot pretty, pretty black and white with it, which did make it a lot easier. We didn't have to phase out of one and phase into the other.
00;18;38;16 - 00;18;43;21
Nicole
We were able to pretty much be like, okay, closing down, opening up.
00;18;43;23 - 00;18;45;17

00;19;01;19 - 00;19;18;11
Danielle Hayden
As you've continued to grow the podcast and grow the community, which is amazing, you've had to continue to build a team and build this business. So how are you using your financials today to start to make these decisions and grow this new business?
00;19;18;13 - 00;19;20;19
Nicole
So with our show, it's interesting because it
00;19;20;19 - 00;19;22;03
Nicole
does, it doesn't
00;19;22;03 - 00;19;41;20
Nicole
have seasons necessarily, but we do have seasons because as we cover a book, there are, there is a certain listenership that is listening solely for that book. And then they'll dip away and then they'll come back, especially as series continue. So we know, okay, whenever we cover this type of book, we know we're going to have a bump in listenership, which typically means a bump in revenue as well.
00;19;41;23 - 00;19;55;12
Nicole
We know that when we're covering a book that maybe doesn't have quite that bump in listenership, we need to focus those extras on, you know, whether it's live appearances or live shows or stuff like that, where it is like, I'm not going to say supplementing, but
00;19;56;16 - 00;20;13;23
Nicole
putting our energy into different pockets of the revenue. So several things, number one is at the end of the year, we did a huge financial meeting where it was like, okay, if we make the same amount that we did last year, it would be this amount. If we grow 10%, it would be this amount. If we grow 25%, it would be this amount.
00;20;13;26 - 00;20;36;18
Nicole
And it, I'll say it's already I think we've already grown well over 25%. So seeing that amount and knowing, okay, those are the numbers that we're dealing with this next year. Obviously how much do we want to take home? And then where are areas of the business where it is like, okay, we can let go of this.
00;20;36;18 - 00;20;49;25
Nicole
So for instance, we actually just hired an amazing, I love her so much, a community assistant. And she, we call her the sanity manager's sanity manager. So she is-
00;20;49;25 - 00;20;54;20
Nicole
We’re very, very proper over here at Fantasy Fangirls.
00;20;54;22 - 00;21;15;14
Nicole
So the sanity manager's sanity manager, she deals with a lot of, like, the ins and outs of every single day that, quite frankly, we just couldn't get to, like, a bunch of emails or fan emails or, we get things called ARCs or advanced reader copies from a lot of publishers. And so, which is amazing, and we're so lucky to be in that position.
00;21;15;20 - 00;21;39;07
Nicole
And so she fields all of those and you know, sending them the correct addresses and all of this kind of stuff. So having her was like, would it finally boil down to where do we feel like things are slipping through the cracks and who do we need to make that happen? And this we we put out a call to an application. We had 3,000, a little over 3,000 people apply, which
00;21;39;07 - 00;21;43;23
Nicole
was a lot to go through, but we felt so lucky.
00;21;44;00 - 00;22;07;10
Nicole
And we narrowed it down to this amazing, amazing person who's just kicking absolute butt. We knew that social media was something that was starting to, we have, you know, I think 22,000 or 25,000 or something like that on Instagram. So we knew having someone to be a community manager on there was really important. Then also, these outlines are 60 pages every single week.
00;22;07;10 - 00;22;15;25
Nicole
That leads to about 22,000 words, 19 to 22,000 words, which is a short novella every single week.
00;22;15;27 - 00;22;18;22
Nicole
And we you got tired.
00;22;18;28 - 00;22;29;15
Nicole
And so having someone now who is our outline, content researcher who goes in and does the first few drafts of a few different areas, and that saves us a bunch of different hours.
00;22;29;18 - 00;22;31;07
Nicole
So the primary, it's the very
00;22;31;07 - 00;22;38;04
Nicole
long winded answer to your question is we looked at what were areas of the business that were either slipping through the
00;22;38;04 - 00;22;39;10
Nicole
cracks or
00;22;39;10 - 00;23;07;05
Nicole
sucking too much time and energy out of ourselves that we did not have to do, and we said, who would be a good fit for those? Is it someone we already know? Is it someone who's already been on the team, or is it someone new, like for instance, in the community assistant example, where we would call out for an application, but it's very important to us to, as we're looking at these 1099 contractors to give them a very fair wage, especially as they are fans of the show. Like, we wanted,
00;23;07;08 - 00;23;20;20
Nicole
it is it is deeply important to us to give back and give back and give back. And this is one of those ways that we looked at that. And so we crunched some numbers. We said, what's the max they could be doing every single month. What is the max that that would be. And then we looked and made sure the money was there.
00;23;20;20 - 00;23;26;22
Nicole
And if it was and the need was great enough, we said, hey, you're hired. And so it was,
00;23;26;22 - 00;23;27;25
Nicole
it was maybe
00;23;27;25 - 00;23;33;17
Nicole
not the most like analytical way, but it was more, it was really more based off of
00;23;33;19 - 00;23;36;01
Nicole
vibes and off of where
00;23;36;04 - 00;23;39;01
Nicole
are we tired and where can we get help?
00;23;39;03 - 00;23;53;25
Danielle Hayden
And how did you decide that you can afford it? Because that's the one of the things that I hear from our clients and business owners all the time is I want to hire. My energy is low. I feel burnt out, but I feel like I can't afford it or I don't know.
00;23;53;28 - 00;23;59;06
Nicole
I think we are very fortunate that we had access
00;23;59;09 - 00;24;00;13
Nicole
and
00;24;00;16 - 00;24;26;27
Nicole
we looked at that access and said, where can this go? Does it go in our pockets or does it go back? And the answer was pretty commonly back. So that was that. I feel like I, it's not exactly the, the answer that would help the masses, but the answer was the money was there. And, but I will speak to my previous position where there was not money there.
00;24;26;27 - 00;24;28;28
Nicole
I, I was living paycheck to paycheck
00;24;29;01 - 00;24;29;26
Nicole
hard.
00;24;29;29 - 00;25;08;13
Nicole
And it finally boiled down to what is the need great enough? And if the need was, I somehow figured it out. I took a pay cut, or I tried to supplement that person's income with making sure they were producing money for the business. So, for instance, one of our positions that we have under Fantasy Fangirls, they are constantly looking at, okay, what are ways that we can monetize this area and that right there pays their salary and that makes it a lot easier.
00;25;08;13 - 00;25;12;28
Nicole
So I don't know if that's exactly the best answer to that. That's such a perfect answer.
00;25;12;28 - 00;25;14;19
Danielle Hayden
I want to I want to recap like two things in there,
00;25;14;19 - 00;25;15;23
Nicole
because- Yes, please.
00;25;15;25 - 00;25;38;07
Danielle Hayden
One thing that you just said right there is return. Like every dollar has a job. And so making sure that each contractor or each team member that is working for you, that there's a ROI, there's a return of investment of each dollar that you're spending. So I love that, whether it be saving you money, saving you time, or actually bringing in revenue, it's important that we're looking at our expenses that way.
00;25;38;10 - 00;26;00;18
Danielle Hayden
And, you know, not everybody who says I feel like I can't afford it doesn't mean that they can't afford it. It just means that they feel like they can't, like gut feeling. Like I feel like I'm not ready to spend the money. But often when we actually look at the net income or the expenses, the real question is, I want to take these dollars and what do I do with them?
00;26;00;18 - 00;26;24;00
Danielle Hayden
Because there's I want to improve my education, I want to take a draw, I want to work focus on wealth building. I want to buy the professional development coach. Yeah. I want to do all the things and what is specifically and when you're hiring a team member, it's ongoing. It's different. You know, it's different than hiring a one-time coach.
00;26;24;00 - 00;26;31;09
Danielle Hayden
It's different when you're bringing them into the fold and committing to a portion of that reoccurring revenue being committed to their salary.
00;26;31;12 - 00;26;33;04
Nicole
Yes. Yes. Exactly.
00;26;33;06 - 00;26;41;04
Danielle Hayden
How often are you looking at your numbers to make business decisions. What do you look at and how often are you looking at them?
00;26;41;06 - 00;26;57;29
Nicole
Every month, like clockwork. My sister and I have a meeting, every single month, where we take every single dollar that the business made, every single pay out that's going out of the business, like contractors or salaries or our salary. And we, we look at it and just,
00;26;58;01 - 00;26;58;17
Nicole
honestly,
00;26;58;17 - 00;27;06;19
Nicole
we just sit with it for a second. We say, okay, does this feel right? And more often than not it does, which is awesome.
00;27;06;21 - 00;27;07;18
Nicole
Or we are
00;27;07;18 - 00;27;16;14
Nicole
also able, if you have it categorized where it's like, okay, here's the total that we made, but here's the individual areas and every single area that we made. So we're able to see
00;27;16;21 - 00;27;17;01
Nicole
Oh,
00;27;17;01 - 00;27;17;24
Nicole
hey, during
00;27;17;24 - 00;27;18;04
Nicole
this
00;27;18;04 - 00;27;25;01
Nicole
book series we had a huge bump in fan club members. So that number went up, or
00;27;25;03 - 00;27;25;17
Nicole
social
00;27;25;17 - 00;27;47;19
Nicole
media content really contributed to this amount from sponsorships through that platform. Okay. Amazing. So it it's more so not to make decisions, but it's to make sure we're looking at the numbers and make sure things are looking right. Because I'll be honest, it's not something I did with my previous position because I was too scared.
00;27;47;21 - 00;27;49;19
Nicole
And I now,
00;27;49;22 - 00;27;50;24
Nicole
with
00;27;50;27 - 00;27;53;08
Nicole
so many people under me, it's like,
00;27;53;10 - 00;28;02;18
Nicole
Buckle up, buttercup! Like, scared or not, you're doing this. And so that helps a lot to know that,
00;28;02;18 - 00;28;04;09
Nicole
okay, like
00;28;04;12 - 00;28;05;10
Nicole
it just it helps
00;28;05;10 - 00;28;11;17
Nicole
me feel like there's a purpose behind every single thing that we do, and there is that ROI as well.
00;28;11;19 - 00;28;26;29
Danielle Hayden
Yeah. I know you didn't call it CEO time, but that's like what I think of as, like, taking time out of the business. And that's why I encourage so many of our clients to like books their call with our money team. Like, take that moment-and I want to hear about how it's working out to have your sister as your partner-
00;28;26;29 - 00;28;42;06
Danielle Hayden
but like, if you don't have that person in your business, make sure that you have somebody to take that time out. So to be able to talk about what's working, what's not working, what are the numbers look like, and does it feel right and do you want to continue to do it?
00;28;42;12 - 00;29;04;14
Nicole
I feel like it's so intimidating when you're solo. That is something I wish I had done more when I was a solo entrepreneur is, like I and it's truly just because I was like, oh, I feel stupid. But like every single time I hop on a meeting with one of my, like, one of my accountants under Kickstart, I never felt stupid.
00;29;04;14 - 00;29;06;02
Nicole
I just would ask questions and I'd
00;29;06;02 - 00;29;12;22
Nicole
be like, I don't care if this is a stupid question. And Sarah would be like, shut up, Nicole, it's a fine question, like you’re good, and I
00;29;12;23 - 00;29;26;16
Nicole
feel like, I wish I would have taken up a little bit more of that time where it's like, okay, like, let's look like, let me do this with you. So it's like, I felt like I had a buddy to work off of, and that was entirely my my own brain holding me back there.
00;29;26;18 - 00;29;27;09
Nicole
But I'm glad you
00;29;27;09 - 00;29;30;12
Danielle Hayden
shared that, because a lot of people will say the same thing is-
00;29;30;16 - 00;29;36;01
Nicole
Book a call with your accountants! Do it!
00;29;36;07 - 00;29;37;15
Danielle Hayden
They're nice!
00;29;37;17 - 00;29;47;03
Nicole
They are. They know things. Oh my God, they know so many things that I don't and I love it so much. But so you mentioned
00;29;47;17 - 00;29;52;17
Nicole
working with Lexi and working with my sister. Yeah, let’s hear about that. It is, I talk
00;29;52;17 - 00;29;55;17
Nicole
to a lot of other, book community
00;29;55;17 - 00;30;00;15
Nicole
members who own a business and they are solo and almost every single one of them says,
00;30;00;15 - 00;30;01;03
Nicole
Oh,
00;30;01;03 - 00;30;05;28
Nicole
my God, you're so lucky. And almost every single time I reply back with, yeah, I know.
00;30;06;01 - 00;30;08;09
Nicole
Like, thank you, I know.
00;30;08;11 - 00;30;10;25
Nicole
Because I don't take it for granted, neither does she.
00;30;10;28 - 00;30;14;18
Nicole
It's such a hard world
00;30;14;19 - 00;30;16;23
Nicole
being an entrepreneur and it is already
00;30;16;23 - 00;30;18;17
Nicole
so
00;30;18;20 - 00;30;41;08
Nicole
individualized and lonely. And so when I do hop on these calls with my sister, we're talking through everything. We are talking through exact numbers. We're both looking at the spreadsheets. We're both in the, every single detail of things. And it makes it so much easier because you don't feel alone. And it also makes it easier because her and I are very yin and yang to each other.
00;30;41;10 - 00;30;43;21
Nicole
She comes from the corporate world like hardcore.
00;30;43;29 - 00;30;48;02
Nicole
I don't. I barely remember what corporate life was like.
00;30;48;04 - 00;31;05;15
Nicole
And she has a lot more of that marketing, that PR brain, whereas I have a lot more of the scrappy, the production, a lot more of the creative side. I went to school for musical theater, so a little bit more of that on-camera. I, I tend to do a lot more on-camera stuff through like, social media or stuff like that.
00;31;05;17 - 00;31;09;21
Nicole
And the irony is that we, I've dragged her into the spotlight so hard.
00;31;09;21 - 00;31;10;22
Nicole
And she came kicking
00;31;10;22 - 00;31;12;01
Nicole
and screaming lovingly.
00;31;12;04 - 00;31;13;21
Nicole
And,
00;31;14;29 - 00;31;16;16
Nicole
we really, we really balance each other out with it.
00;31;16;21 - 00;31;17;03
Nicole
So that,
00;31;17;03 - 00;31;29;08
Nicole
as we're looking at these numbers, I tend to be a little bit more impulsive-I'll just go ahead and call myself out-where she is very thoughtful, and it gives us that pro/con list, look at it from all sides, which is really helpful.
00;31;29;10 - 00;32;06;14
Danielle Hayden
Well, I'm so glad to hear that that's working out well. And you're right, entrepreneurship is so lonely. And that's why I encourage entrepreneurs to hire before they need to hire, because it starts to build that team of support, whoever it might be, whatever your strong suit isn't, whether it be bookkeeping, tax, marketing, your ads, social media, having somebody in production editing your podcast, like whatever your weakest link is to have that person to come in and be an expert in your business, to create a world in entrepreneurship that doesn't feel so lonely.
00;32;06;17 - 00;32;07;13
Nicole
Yes, exactly.
00;32;07;13 - 00;32;09;25
Nicole
Like I, I don't know how I did
00;32;09;25 - 00;32;21;06
Nicole
five years of not being able to like, hop into our, we have a Discord which is basically our Slack, hop into our Discord and say like, good morning team! Like, how's everyone doing today? Like, I
00;32;21;08 - 00;32;23;27
Nicole
I, I missed that so much.
00;32;23;27 - 00;32;29;14
Nicole
And it's just that little element of community, even in the harder decisions or in the,
00;32;29;16 - 00;32;30;16
Nicole
Hey, I'm going on a walk.
00;32;30;16 - 00;32;32;06
Nicole
I'll talk to you guys in a minute. Like, that's,
00;32;32;11 - 00;32;33;06
Nicole
that is so
00;32;33;06 - 00;32;33;22
Nicole
important.
00;32;33;22 - 00;32;34;24
Nicole
And it just it helped.
00;32;34;24 - 00;32;36;22
Nicole
It helped a lot, I'll be real.
00;32;36;24 - 00;32;43;18
Danielle Hayden
Yeah, that’s awesome. All right, what's next for for you guys? Like when you think about your big goals, what's next?
00;32;43;21 - 00;32;49;28
Nicole
A million of them. Some I can share on-
00;32;49;28 - 00;32;52;18
Nicole
air and some I can't. So,
00;32;52;20 - 00;32;52;28
Nicole
it,
00;32;53;05 - 00;32;59;12
Nicole
as a business, the big things are we're looking at bringing other shows under our network. So having
00;33;00;27 - 00;33;13;15
Nicole
a few shows devoted to some other elements of fantasy or some other conversations that we're just frankly, we're not able to have just due to time, that I'm so excited about that.
00;33;13;16 - 00;33;14;16
Danielle Hayden
Yeah, that sounds amazing.
00;33;14;18 - 00;33;20;06
Nicole
On a personal business note, so, like, whenever I say personal business, that means I'm just not doing it with Lexi.
00;33;20;12 - 00;33;21;29
Nicole
It just means it's her and I
00;33;21;29 - 00;33;37;22
Nicole
doing it separately is, we are both in the process of writing our own books. And so I'm working with our talent agency and our book agent and developmental editor and nose into pages and pages and thousands of words,
00;33;37;25 - 00;33;39;13
Nicole
which is the
00;33;39;13 - 00;33;40;11
Nicole
hardest thing I've ever
00;33;40;11 - 00;33;41;03
Nicole
done. That's
00;33;41;10 - 00;33;42;23
Danielle Hayden
different from being a podcaster.
00;33;42;26 - 00;33;43;17
Nicole
It is,
00;33;43;17 - 00;34;07;27
Nicole
and I'm so grateful I'm doing it. And I'll be real, at first I was trying to get it, like really, really fast. And I think that I realized, okay, in my sanity, I don't think that produces my best work. I'm not in her, the main character's brain as easily when I'm flooring it on the gas, even though that is very much the type of character I'm working on.
00;34;08;00 - 00;34;25;07
Nicole
So I'm easing up a little bit, but working with my book editor has been a huge help because like we've been saying, having someone to bounce ideas off of-their job is literally to ask me questions that make me think about characters in a different way. So that is something that is on the horizon. I'm hoping to finish that.
00;34;25;09 - 00;34;27;03
Nicole
I won't say, actually, I won't say a date. Never mind.
00;34;27;10 - 00;34;30;20
Nicole
I'm like, I shouldn't do that.
00;34;30;22 - 00;34;51;14
Nicole
And then there's a few other things that we have in the pipeline that are hopefully going to be the next year. We're really wanting to do more live shows, and do, get out of Colorado a little bit more because we have so many fans overseas or on the East Coast and all of this stuff. And then we are also going into our con season.
00;34;51;14 - 00;34;59;04
Nicole
So, a bunch of different conventions and we're interviewing some amazing authors and I can't wait.
00;34;59;06 - 00;35;13;27
Danielle Hayden
Yeah, that's going to be so much fun. That's so exciting. All right, what's one piece of advice that you can leave to somebody who's listening, who's maybe struggling in their business or is in growth season? And you've been in both kind of seasons of business, so maybe one for each.
00;35;14;03 - 00;35;17;04
Nicole
I was gonna say, I can't do one. I'm going to have to do two.
00;35;17;07 - 00;35;21;21
Nicole
For the person who's in the struggle season,
00;35;22;25 - 00;35;44;11
Nicole
who maybe feels like the Sunday scaries are starting to get them, or they're starting to feel bogged down by feeling like they're on a hamster wheel. If something is tugging at your attention, do not ignore it. I don't care if it's not productive. I don't care if it's the opposite of productive. It could turn into something productive and something beyond your wildest dreams.
00;35;44;11 - 00;36;06;10
Nicole
If I hadn't listened to that weird tug on my heart to hey, put down this book by, I don't know, insert person's name here in the personal development world, and instead pick up this giant, red cover Sarah J. Maas book, I wouldn't be where I am today, and that was entirely a not productive decision, even though I
00;36;06;12 - 00;36;06;20
Nicole
was.
00;36;06;20 - 00;36;09;23
Nicole
hounding myself every single day to do things that were productive, productive,
00;36;09;23 - 00;36;10;18
Nicole
productive, just like,
00;36;10;18 - 00;36;11;02
Nicole
I was burnt out.
00;36;11;02 - 00;36;15;09
Nicole
Have a hobby. Freaking have a hobby! Yes, absolutely!
00;36;15;11 - 00;36;16;02
Nicole
Taking time
00;36;16;02 - 00;36;19;14
Danielle Hayden
out of the business allows you to be more inspired in business.
00;36;19;19 - 00;36;41;20
Nicole
And the irony is that now, I need that advice, is having time out of the hobbies is something I'm working on in therapy, or having hobbies out of the business. Excuse me. Then on the flip side, for the growth element, I feel like it's really easy to white knuckle growth and, like, hold on to it so tight and say, this can never leave.
00;36;41;20 - 00;36;47;10
Nicole
This can never leave. It has to be like this forever. I can't lose anything that I did today. There's going to be ups and downs and
00;36;47;14 - 00;36;48;18
Nicole
I
00;36;48;20 - 00;37;02;01
Nicole
have just come out of a huge growth period in the business, and it felt like I had to white knuckle everything. I felt like everything was so important and so urgent, and if I had just calmed down,
00;37;02;03 - 00;37;02;10
Nicole
and
00;37;02;10 - 00;37;18;14
Nicole
told myself, hey, you're going to have ebbs and flows and that's okay. Like, you don't need to like, squeeze this lemon for everything it's worth. I think in the growth season I would have enjoyed it more, frankly. Yeah.
00;37;18;17 - 00;37;22;04
Danielle Hayden
Well, that's a word to yourself now that you can enjoy.
00;37;22;06 - 00;37;22;28
Nicole
Exactly,
00;37;23;03 - 00;37;29;23
Nicole
both of these pieces of advice, I'm like, I should listen to myself. That was good, Nicole. You should take that advice.
00;37;29;26 - 00;37;32;10
Danielle Hayden
That's a good one.
00;37;32;12 - 00;37;32;23
Nicole
All right!
00;37;32;23 - 00;37;39;27
Danielle Hayden
